Université La Sagesse welcomed Patricia Karam, an advisor at the Middle East Institute and former vice president of policy at the American Task Force for Lebanon (ATFL), for an insightful discussion on U.S. – Lebanese relations.

Held at the invitation of Dr. Antoine Sfeir, Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations, the session opened with remarks highlighting Lebanon’s pressing challenges, including the trilateral agreement, national sovereignty, economic difficulties, and the need to strengthen state institutions.

The discussion examined U.S. policy toward Lebanon under the Trump administration, emphasizing the differing priorities of Washington and Beirut.
Ms. Karam explored key U.S. policy instruments, including military assistance, financial pressure, diplomacy, and economic leverage, while highlighting the administration’s transactional approach characterized on reciprocity, measurable outcomes, and direct political engagement.

A central takeaway was that international support can create opportunities, but lasting progress depends on Lebanon’s ability to strengthen its institutions, consolidate state authority, and safeguard its sovereignty.

The exchange offered students a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of the political, diplomatic, and economic dynamics shaping U.S.– Lebanese relations.

Université La Sagesse extends its sincere appreciation to Patricia Karam for sharing her expertise and engaging with students, and to Dr. Antoine Sfeir for initiating and facilitating this enriching academic discussion.
